Suspending elections, free press, civil rights in response to emergency situations is not new and is not unheard of even in the United States.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the US government stripped Japanese Americans of their rights and put them into concentration camps for the duration of the war. African-Americans were denied full and fair participation in US society for a hundreds years post Civil War, and still had to fight for every fragment of dignity afterwards.
So, let’s have a thought experiment. What is stopping Donald Trump from going on TV, saying that the electoral process is too corrupted, too rife with vote fraud, and ballot fixing, that a true election result is not possible? To ensure citizen’s rights are fully protected, the 2020 elections are being suspended until a complete overhaul and reform of the election process can be completed.
He controls the DOJ, FBI, Senate, Supreme Court, and has the blind allegiance of the Republican Party and Fox News.
What is to stop him later deciding that Democratic representatives won their positions by fraud and retroactively cancelling the results and putting a representative he names into their place? So what if people protest? Let them. Protests never stopped anything and if they get too bothersome, that is what the military is there for. If the soldiers won’t kill the civilians (and is there any reason to think they wouldn’t? Remember the 1960’s?) then there is always paramilitaries ready to step in.
So seriously. What is there to stop him from declaring himself a dictator?
